Unlock Your Australian Dream: Post-Study Work Opportunities for International Students
Studying in Australia offers a world-class education, an enviable lifestyle, and exceptional career prospects. Many international students aspire to extend their stay beyond graduation and build a life in Australia. Fortunately, Australia provides clear pathways for this through post-study work opportunities. At Transpacific Immigration Services, we understand that your aspirations extend far beyond the classroom, and we are dedicated to helping you achieve them.
Your Pathway to Australian Work: The Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485)
The primary avenue for international students to work in Australia after completing their studies is the Temporary Graduate visa, subclass 485. This visa permits you to live, work, and study in Australia for a specified period following the completion of your course.
There are two main streams under this visa:
Graduate Work Stream: This stream is designed for students who have recently graduated with skills and qualifications listed on Australia’s Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). If you meet the criteria, you can typically remain in Australia for 18 months.
Post-Study Work Stream: This stream is for eligible higher education graduates and allows for a longer stay to work or study in Australia. Graduates with Bachelor’s and Master’s by coursework degrees generally qualify for 2 years. Those who have completed an eligible Master’s by research may stay for 3 years, and for a Doctoral degree, the duration can extend up to 4 years. A significant advantage of this stream is that it does not require a skills assessment or nomination by a state or territory government.
To be eligible for the subclass 485 visa, you generally need to fulfil the following:
Have completed a qualifying course of study.
Meet the required English language proficiency.
Satisfy health and character requirements.
Submit your application within 6 months of completing your course.
Have previously held a valid student visa.
Navigating the eligibility requirements and application process for the subclass 485 visa can be intricate. Our expert advisors at Transpacific Immigration Services are equipped to ensure you meet all criteria and that your application is meticulously prepared.
Maximising Your Post-Study Work Visa
This visa is a remarkable opportunity to gain invaluable Australian work experience in your field of study or a related discipline. This hands-on experience is crucial for enhancing your resume and boosting your career prospects, not only within Australia but also on a global scale. It also provides an excellent platform to cultivate your professional network in Australia. We are committed to helping our clients make the most of this period for professional development and networking.
Building Towards Permanent Residency (PR)
A significant aspiration for many international students is to settle permanently in Australia. The post-study work visa often serves as a critical first step towards this goal. The work experience acquired during this period can substantially strengthen your eligibility for skilled migration pathways, such as the General Skilled Migration (GSM) program. Factors such as your occupation being on a skilled occupation list, your points score, and potentially securing a state or territory nomination are vital for PR applications. We specialise in guiding students through these pathways to achieve their long-term settlement goals.
Exploring Other Potential Opportunities
While the subclass 485 visa is the primary post-study work pathway, other opportunities may arise. For instance, securing sponsorship from an employer in a regional area could make you eligible for the Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 494). Some employers might also offer sponsorship for the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa (subclass 482) after you have accumulated some relevant work experience. Our expertise extends beyond the initial post-study visa, offering guidance on various work visa options and permanent residency pathways.
